Samsung is outsourcing DDR5 to focus on AI memory

Samsung is shifting all new DDR5 production to outside contractors, freeing up factory space for the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI accelerators. HBM commands a 3–4× price premium over standard DDR5, per Global SMT. For anyone buying RAM for a PC or server, this means the Samsung-branded dies inside your next memory kit may come from a manufacturer you've never heard of.

The pivot

Rather than build new fabs, Samsung is repurposing existing production lines for HBM3E and the next-generation HBM4 it wants in mass production by 2026. Three OSAT (outsourced semiconductor assembly and test) partners are picking up the DDR5 slack, reports The Elec:

- Dreamtech — already running mass DDR5 production at its Noida plant in India, which launched in November 2025 and targets 50 million units a year. - Hanyang Digitech — handles assembly in Vietnam. - SFA Semicon — operates lines in the Philippines.

These are packaging and assembly specialists, not vertically integrated chipmakers. The underlying DRAM dies still come from Samsung, but the final module build happens elsewhere — adding logistics steps that could lengthen lead times for brands like Crucial and Corsair that rely on Samsung components.

Chasing SK Hynix

The strategic pressure behind this move is stark. SK Hynix currently holds roughly 50–62% of the HBM market. Samsung's share collapsed from 41% in Q2 2024 to around 17% in Q2 2025, after qualification issues delayed its HBM3E supply to NVIDIA. TrendForce reports SK Hynix is set to supply roughly two-thirds of NVIDIA's HBM4 for the Vera Rubin platform, leaving Samsung fighting for the remainder.

To close that gap, Samsung is investing 56 trillion won (about $41 billion) to expand HBM production at its Cheonan and Onyang facilities in South Korea. Every wafer start that used to go toward DDR5 now goes toward that target.

What this means for buyers

In practical terms, DDR5 supply for PCs and servers is unlikely to dry up — the outsourcing model keeps volume moving. But the assembly chain is longer and less controlled, which can mean slower response to demand spikes. Samsung is betting that winning back AI chip customers from SK Hynix is worth ceding ground in the consumer and enterprise DRAM markets it once dominated. Whether that gamble pays off depends almost entirely on whether its HBM4 clears NVIDIA qualification on schedule.
