Tropico 7 is coming to Switch 2 with a day-one Game Pass launch
Tropico 7, the latest entry in Kalypso's long-running Caribbean dictatorship sim, is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on January 28, 2027. It will also land on Game Pass from day one — the first time in the franchise's history that every platform gets the game at the same moment.
The port
The Switch 2 version is being handled by Engine Software, a studio with a solid track record on Nintendo ports including the Ni no Kuni series. That's worth noting because Tropico 6's Switch outing earned only mixed reviews, according to Nintendo Life, largely due to performance constraints on the original hardware. Engine Software's involvement suggests a more technically focused effort this time around.
The Switch 2 build is specifically optimized for handheld play and takes advantage of the console's new hardware. Joy-Con 2 mouse controls are supported — useful for a game built around clicking through menus, placing buildings, and micromanaging an island economy. Nintendo's GameChat voice and screen-share features are included as well.
What's new in 7
The core game is developed by Gaming Minds Studios, Kalypso's internal development team. Tropico 7 introduces overhauled terraforming tools and a reworked Council system, which represent the biggest mechanical changes from Tropico 6. The premise stays the same: play El Presidente, balance the demands of rival political factions, keep the population from revolting, and build a suspiciously Cuba-shaped island nation into a thriving — or at least stable — dictatorship.
The game has also received roughly €2 million in German Federal Government funding, per Wikipedia, making it one of the largest video game projects currently in development in Germany.
Availability
Tropico 7 launches January 28, 2027 on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. Game Pass subscribers on Xbox and PC get it at launch at no extra cost. No standalone retail price has been announced yet for the US or UK.
