Xiaomi 18 Pro gets a built-in privacy display — here's how it works
Xiaomi's upcoming 18 Pro and Pro Max flagships will ship with a built-in privacy display — a feature that blocks bystanders from reading your screen without any physical filter or case. The phones launch in China on September 23, 2026, though no US or UK release date has been announced. For now, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra remains the only mainstream option with this kind of hardware-level screen protection in Western markets.
The tech
Xiaomi's solution uses TCL M11 RGB OLED panels with a dual-pixel architecture. Two alternating sets of pixels share the screen: standard wide-angle pixels for normal viewing, and a second set of narrow-angle pixels fitted with microscopic physical barriers on each side. In regular use, both sets fire together and the display looks like any premium OLED. Switch on privacy mode and the wide-angle pixels shut off entirely — only the narrow-angle pixels stay lit.
The result: straight-on, the screen looks perfectly clear. At angles beyond 60 degrees, side brightness drops to roughly 1% of the front-facing level, making the display appear nearly black to anyone beside you. Xiaomi says users can toggle privacy mode manually or set it per-app. Peak brightness on the panels hits 4,000 nits, so normal visibility isn't sacrificed.

This approach mirrors what Samsung built into the S26 Ultra, and it's no coincidence — Xiaomi Xiaomi is testing a Privacy Display feature in HyperOS 4 in HyperOS 4 since August. The privacy logic is baked into the hardware rather than handled by software filters, which means it can't be bypassed by a third-party app.
What else is confirmed
Beyond the display, Xiaomi has confirmed Leica dual 200MP cameras, the new HyperOS 4 software layer, and batteries ranging from 7,000 to 8,500 mAh depending on model. The full spec sheet drops at the September 23 event at 7 PM China time (noon UTC, 1 PM BST, 8 AM ET).
Global availability
Privacy display shipments are projected to hit 21 million units across all brands in 2026, up from roughly one million in 2025 — a sign of how fast this feature is moving from niche to mainstream. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei are all in the race per SammyFans. For US and UK buyers, a global rollout is expected sometime in Q4 2026 to Q1 2027, but no pricing or carrier deals have been announced yet.
