Samsung's S27 Ultra gets its first real battery upgrade in six years
Samsung's next Ultra flagship will finally get a bigger battery — the first meaningful increase since the Galaxy S21 Ultra in 2021. China's 3C regulatory database, per GSMarena, confirms the Galaxy S27 Ultra carries a 5,700mAh typical cell, up from the 5,000mAh that has been standard across every Ultra model for the past five years. For anyone who kept the S22, S23, or S24 Ultra and watched the battery spec stay frozen, 2027 is the first genuine reason to consider an upgrade on that front alone.
The numbers
The 3C filing lists the S27 Ultra's rated capacity at 5,534mAh — 5,700mAh is the typical figure Samsung will use in marketing. That's a 700mAh jump over the S26 Ultra. Alongside it sits a brand-new model tier: the Galaxy S27 Pro, which gets a 5,200mAh cell (5,087mAh rated). That's a new entry in the Samsung lineup, with no direct predecessor to compare against. Both phones support 60W wired charging, matching the S26 Ultra's speed rather than raising it, as Android Authority notes.
The S27 Pro is shaping up to be an interesting option in its own right — earlier leaks suggest it packs Ultra-grade cameras into a smaller body without the S Pen, potentially filling the gap between the standard Plus and the full Ultra.
The gap that remains
The upgrade is real, but context matters. Chinese brands have moved well past 7,000mAh — some approaching 11,000mAh in devices like the Honor X9e Pro. At 5,700mAh, Samsung is betting on software efficiency and chip performance over raw capacity. With US pricing expected to land around $1,299 or higher — in line with the S26 Ultra's launch price — buyers will be paying a premium for a phone that still trails its Chinese competition on battery size by a significant margin.
Samsung hasn't confirmed pricing or a launch date, but a January or February 2027 reveal follows the brand's typical schedule. Pre-orders aren't open yet. If the S27 base model interests you too, recent renders suggest it keeps a familiar design with a slightly larger footprint.
