Meta VR Glasses 2027: $1,300, 100 grams, and a real shot at the mainstream
Meta announced its VR Glasses 2027 on September 24, priced at $1,299.99 and launching in spring 2027 across 25 countries, including the US and UK. The glasses weigh just 100 grams — roughly the same as a pair of sunglasses — and pair with a 300-gram external compute puck. At less than half the price of Apple Vision Pro, which started at $3,499, this is the most credible mainstream VR push yet from any major company.
The hardware
The compute puck runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite chip with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, expandable via microSD. Battery life is rated at three hours of continuous high-resolution video, with 45W fast charging. The glasses themselves carry dual 5K micro-OLED displays running at 120Hz with a 70° horizontal field of view — narrower than the Quest 3's 110°, a real trade-off worth knowing before you buy. Six outward-facing cameras handle passthrough and spatial tracking; four inward cameras enable eye-tracking and iris-based authentication.

What it does
Full-color video passthrough lets you stay aware of your surroundings without removing the glasses. Hand-gesture control replaces physical controllers for most tasks, though Meta's Touch Plus controllers work with compatible Quest titles. At launch, over 75 hand-tracked games and apps will be available, giving immediate access to the full Quest ecosystem. The glasses also work as a large virtual monitor for PC multitasking — connect wirelessly and spread windows across your field of view.

The content play
Meta is betting heavily on 3D cinema. Disney+ and Peacock will add 3D support, and National Geographic will launch a dedicated 180° 3D video service in 2027. A new format called VR Enhanced Cinema pushes visual effects beyond the virtual screen frame to fill your peripheral view — Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: Episode IV are confirmed as early titles. IMAX Enhanced certification covers the display and audio pipeline, per Meta's official announcement.

The competition
Vision Pro never found its mainstream audience — Apple's M5 refresh failed to generate meaningful demand, leaving the $3,499 headset as a de facto dead end. Valve's Steam Frame, which opened preorders at $1,059, is the closest rival on price, but targets PC gaming rather than standalone mixed reality. Meta's two-part form factor sidesteps the weight problem that dogged Vision Pro's 600-gram frame, and the $1,300 price point is the first time a fully capable VR headset has landed below the psychological barrier of a flagship smartphone, confirms Road to VR.
UK pricing in pounds sterling has not been announced. Regional content details — including whether Disney+ 3D launches in the UK simultaneously — remain unconfirmed. Spring 2027 gives Meta time to finalize retail partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic.
