Sony Close to Landing the Battlefield Movie, Reports Say

A Battlefield movie now looks likely to land at Sony Pictures. The studio is in talks for the film rights to EA's military shooter series, according to The Wrap, after a bidding contest with several of Hollywood's biggest names. The deal isn't signed, and Sony hasn't commented. If it closes, Battlefield and Call of Duty will compete head-to-head in cinemas.

The package

Michael B. Jordan, who won the Best Actor Oscar for Sinners in March, would produce. He also wants to star, though Deadline describes that as conditional. Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the recent Mission: Impossible films, would write, direct and produce. Deadline also reports that EA is involved as a co-producer.

The Wrap says Warner Bros., Amazon MGM, Universal, Netflix and Apple Studios were all in the running. Sony came out in front. No plot, casting beyond Jordan, or release date has been announced.

The idea isn't new. A Battlefield adaptation was first reported early in 2026, with McQuarrie already linked to it. Game movies have become a safe bet for studios, and Battlefield's big-scale warfare suits the screen. Expect spectacle over realism.

The rival

Call of Duty already has a date. Paramount's film opens on June 30, 2028, with Peter Berg directing and Taylor Sheridan writing. Battlefield has no slot yet, so Sony could try to open earlier or aim for a similar window.

Paramount is also in the middle of a big corporate shake-up. Its merger with Warner Bros. means one of the losing Battlefield bidders will soon share a roof with the Call of Duty studio.

What it means for players

For game fans, a film changes little in the short term. It could bring more attention to a series that has had a rough stretch behind the scenes. EA's leadership drew criticism when its CEO collected a $38.6M pay package in the same year Battlefield studio staff were laid off.

Nothing is final until Sony and EA sign. A release date, if the deal closes, would likely come after the 2028 Call of Duty film is already in theaters or close to it. Cinemas in the US and UK would be the first stop, with no word yet on streaming.
