Honor Magic9 Pro Max brings ARRI cinema tech to a smartphone — but don't hold your breath in the US
Honor launched the Magic9 Pro Max in China on 28 September 2026, starting at 6,499 yuan (roughly $910). The headline feature is a partnership with ARRI — the Munich-based cinema camera company whose rigs shoot Hollywood films — making this the first consumer phone to carry ARRI branding. European availability is expected November–December 2026; US buyers face a more uncertain wait.
The ARRI angle
ARRI's contribution here isn't a marketing badge. The Magic9 Pro Max shoots 10-bit video with ARRI LogC3 — the same log format used on professional cinema cameras — plus ARRI Wide Gamut 3 color science and 14 ARRI Look LUTs baked in. Honor co-engineered the color pipeline with ARRI directly, per Honor Official. The body design is even styled after classic ARRI camera bodies, with a repositioned camera block meant to stop fingers drifting in front of lenses during handheld shooting.
The camera system itself uses two 200MP sensors: a 1/1.28-inch main (f/1.57) and a 1/1.4-inch periscope telephoto (f/2.6), both larger than those in the standard Honor Magic9's dual 200MP setup. OIS is rated to CIPA 8.0, a step up from the base model's 7.5. A 50MP ultrawide and a 55MP square front camera — which can crop to 1:1, 16:9, or 9:16 without quality loss — round out the system.
The accessories push things further. An optional Photography Master Kit adds two optical teleconverters: the G200 (88g, 2.35x, 200mm equivalent) and the G500 (5.88x, 500mm equivalent, extendable to 1,000mm with digital zoom). A SmallRig video rig with microphone and light mounts completes the semi-pro kit. As noted earlier, the phone also has a built-in gimbal mechanism for stabilized video.
Specs and screen
The 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display peaks at 10,000 nits and uses Honor's Anti-Scratch NanoCrystal Shield glass. The chip is a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The silicon-carbon battery hits 8,800mAh — substantial for a flagship — with 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. The phone runs MagicOS 11 on Android 17. IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings cover dust and water. Colors: Shadow Black, Glacier Silver, and Moss Green.

Availability
UK pricing is estimated at £850–1,000, though no official figure has been announced yet. European, MEA, and Southeast Asian rollouts are expected 4–8 weeks after the China launch — pointing to November or December 2026. US availability is uncertain: trade environment pressures and potential export controls on advanced Snapdragon silicon could block an Americas launch, per Gagadget. No Honor statement on the US has been made.
For video-focused creators, the ARRI partnership is genuinely interesting — no iPhone 16 Pro Max or Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra offers anything comparable in log video color science. Whether the real-world footage lives up to the spec sheet is something independent reviews will need to settle once global units ship.
