First Game of Thrones movie gets a date: June 6, 2029
Game of Thrones is finally getting a cinema release, and you can pencil in the date. Warner Bros. will open Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest in theaters on June 6, 2029, Variety reports. It's the first feature film in a franchise that has only ever lived on HBO. If you've followed the shows on TV, this is the first time the story is built for a big screen.
The story
The film follows Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror who united most of Westeros and founded the dynasty at the heart of the franchise. He lived roughly 300 years before the original series. Fans know him from legend and from George R.R. Martin's books, including Fire & Blood, but he has never appeared in live action.
Martin has reportedly pitched the project as an epic on the scale of Dune, according to the Hollywood Reporter. That is a big promise for a film with no stars attached.
The team
Owen Harris directs. He worked on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Black Mirror. Beau Willimon wrote the screenplay. He ran the early seasons of House of Cards and wrote for Andor, Star Wars' most political series.

The wait
No cast has been announced, and it's unclear when filming starts. The release is also a long way off. HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is coming in early 2027, which leaves a gap of roughly two and a half years before the film arrives. Interest in Westeros could cool in that time.
Warner Bros. is also heading toward Paramount ownership, and the effect on its release calendar isn't clear. Some outlets list June 1 rather than June 6. Variety's date is the one to go by for now.
For now, the release is theatrical only. Nothing has been said about streaming, and no regional release dates or ticketing details have been given. Those usually surface closer to launch.
